Welcome to Fantasy & Fiction Tavern and Tips on Generating Fantasy Names

As I write my own book and forge my own world, I am simply providing you with my insight and tips on what worked and works for ME.
'Tis a novice I am.
So that being said I am no expert and do not claim to be.
Now onward you questioning minds to see if I hold the answers ye seek.

Fantasy Names

Having a hard time naming your characters ,buildings and locations?

My advice if you are doing hard world building and your work spans across many nations with detailed cultures and varying races is to have consistency with the names. So you can.

  • First, I recommend you picture your world in your mind.Think of the specific race, specie and place you are trying to name. Are the people peaceful, otherworldly beings who hold no mortal attachments or is it the name of an underground gambling ring run by a mercenary group. Think of the feeling the name should give off, is it a soft and calming feeling or should it make chills run down your spine? Use more f’s and S’s for more softer names and d’s and k’s for names that should give more force. Is it going to be Sefarina, Denomac or Grougneg.
After envisioning the aspect of your world or the character you are creating, you can try the following tips.

  • Make your own re-occurring consonants for specific races or species. e.g. csk, hn, soh. These could be placed throughout the names of the races or even buildings, whether at the beginning, middle or end of the word. e.g. Resoh cafe, Fesohlan Library, Lady Sohholan. Give the syllables a bit of history or important meaning (the name of the ancient dragon of whom they are descendants was Soh), use various syllables as to not create monotony. It's your story so decide how you want to carry this out, whether for names or locations or both.

  • Make all the names of the tribe end with the same letter. e.g. Generix, Morocnox. Detronax. Make this race specific and preferably a unique ritual used by only one race in that world.
An example I noticed was in Winx Club- Stella, Musa, Faraganda, Aisha, Techna ans Alfea.

  • Assign an existing language to each race, but switch it up a bit.eg Greek or Latin. Decide on the meaning you want to give the name and use google translate to translate it to the language you decide on. So, for the elven race if you decide to use Greek and you want the meaning of the village name to be 'Serenity', that translates to Iremía in Greek, you can use this as is or switch it up a bit ( for example Thiremia Village) to make those who speak Greek also feel the fantasy element of your work. p.s. take care not to form curse words.😅

  • Or you can simply use a name generator. Take note that the creation is yours, so feel free to shorten names you find long and apply your personal touch to the names generated. Here I linked some generators I found helpful.

Ending Notes:- Try to avoid monotony and similarities between different races and species (it's fine if that's what you 're going for). Remember, it's your world so have fun and create interesting worlds, but be careful not to overwhelm yourself. My tips are just suggestions if you need a little advice.

For the book I'm writing now, it is more on the side of soft world building, so I mainly use the generator or add certain syllables when making names. But if you want to build a world that is more extensive, then I think having language rules you follow just like how it is irl (in real life) would be helpful.

Share your thoughts on these tips and if they were helpful to you.

If you have any additional tips I can share with the regulars of the tavern, let me know, as we are still learning.

5 Amazing Websites for World Building

Creating a fictional world can be a confusing process. It can be really fun but sometimes while building the world and writing your book you can end up all over the place, more so for  fantasy works. So amongst the hushed whispers of the tavern I have picked up on a few things that made my creating process easier. Now let me let you in on it. 1.Notebook.ai  https://www.notebook.ai I am having a blast using this site. It allows you to create universes, characters, locations, special items and more. You can record the aspects of your world and fill out the forms with details about them. A big plus is that you can add and remove the fields you want under each category and customize them to the fit the needs of your world. So under the Character category, if your world has no magic you can hide our remove that field. Similarly, if the characters can all transform into animals you can add a field called 'transformation' so that it is possible to fill out that information for ...

Youtube Videos on World Building

Are you a bit stuck writing that world of yours? Even with the website I gave before, you still have a bit of trouble with the world building. Well, since you dropped by here are a couple videos that helped me get a better grasp on the world I created for my book.Don't forget though that this is your work, so don't treat all advice as if it's set in stone. 1)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQTQSbjecLg&t=210s How to build a fictional world - Kate Messner As I said in my earlier post on  world building websites , this video was a very short one and some people in the comments said it didn't really answer anything about world building. But for me I  had my first eureka moment after watching this video.  I think most of us grew up watching or reading fantasy work, even if it wasn't some of the most  classic and famous works . Despite those works of fiction and the games we play giving us an  idea the whole concept of world building might still fly ...
