5 Amazing Websites for World Building

Creating a fictional world can be a confusing process. It can be really fun but sometimes while building the world and writing your book you can end up all over the place, more so for  fantasy works.

So amongst the hushed whispers of the tavern I have picked up on a few things that made my creating process easier. Now let me let you in on it.

1.Notebook.ai https://www.notebook.ai

I am having a blast using this site. It allows you to create universes, characters, locations, special items and more. You can record the aspects of your world and fill out the forms with details about them.

A big plus is that you can add and remove the fields you want under each category and customize them to the fit the needs of your world. So under the Character category, if your world has no magic you can hide our remove that field. Similarly, if the characters can all transform into animals you can add a field called 'transformation' so that it is possible to fill out that information for all the characters.

Not all the categories are available for free use and you need to get the premium to unlock the rest. You can choose to be billed monthly, every three months or yearly.

Oh, another feature it has that I love is the prompts. Some ideas for my book that I didn't think of before came from them.

It will randomly generate questions from the fields that you left unanswered under each category. Some questions I ignored as they weren't necessary, but some gave me new ideas to work with.

I really recommend this site for your world building needs and even if you aren't building a world it perfect for organizing the aspects of your story.

2. Milanote https://milanote.com

I just recently started using Milanote, and it has been such a pleasant time. It allows you to pin your notes on the board and organize it as you see fit and for someone like me who needs to see things in her face to remain functioning, this is heaven sent.

You can create and customize different boards, write quick notes and organize the boards into columns. You can also place links and save images directly to your dashboard from google and you can use lines to connect everything you have in whichever way you please.

Milanote also has templates with examples available for various topics. I really needed this as I was getting lost plotting my novel and the templates gave me some guidance on what I needed to pay attention to.

I have been having a great time with this website so I recommend you check it out yourselves and make use of it as you create.

3.World Anvil  https://www.worldanvil.com

This is a website and community where you can get very detailed with your world and even share it. I will be honest unlike the others I have not used World Anvil to its fullest nor explored all its features. But I'm not here to give a review but talk about how it helped my story and world building.
World Anvil allows you to write out all the details and ideas you have for your work. It has a wide number of sections that cover every aspect of your world.

The aspect of World Anvil I have made the most use of is the Map creation. It allows you to upload a base image for your map and then arrange the coordinates on it as you like. With each location you put down you can go into detail describing it.

On World Anvil, you can also view the worlds created by others and also read manuscripts other users upload.

World Anvil is a wide website that has its own community of creators and users, and I really recommend checking it out.

4. Inkarnate https://inkarnate.com

Inkarnate is an impressive map making website. It is a great resource to use for creating your fantasy world maps. It has a wide selection of templates, textures and items for you to include in your mapmaking.

I plan to make a more detailed map later down so the one above is very basic, but if you want to create a more detailed professional looking map, you will find that some Inkarnate users create helpful guides in their maps on the website and there are also many videos and reviews online explaining how to create great maps using Inkarnate.

Having a map that shows where everything in your world is located makes it easier to write a coherent story and it can even help you develop a plotline. So if you are looking to create a map for your world, I recommend Inkarnate.

5. Youtube https://www.youtube.com/

No, I did not run out of ideas and chose this randomly. If you are looking to world build, especially if it is your first time, I seriously recommend watching YouTube videos on the subject first. When I started I actually just jumped straight into writing my novel without doing any research. It was only when I already posted three chapters did I realize how lacking my book was after re-reading (and the multiple grammatical errors). It was dry and the world building just wasn't there.Only after watching YouTube for a few minutes did my eyes truly opened to world building.

Here are just a few of the videos that really helped me. I'll touch some more on the different videos I watched in another post.

They have three videos in this series, all going in depth on world building.

Some people in the comments said it basically said nothing, but to me I had my first world building eureka after I watched this. Post on the Youtube videos.

Her channel in general has been extremely helpful with my writing process.

So, I really, really recommend watching some videos to aid your creative process. Of course view everything with a grain of salt as this is your book and you should write what you want your story to be. Think of yourself as an athlete and before you start your race you have to go through adequate training or as an adventurer and before you set off on your grand quest, you need to have your training montage. Preparing yourself and furthering your knowledge will make your world building process much easier.

Do you have a number 6 you would add to the list? Let us know down below.

I hope my post was helpful and I wish you all the best as you forge your worlds.

Youtube Videos on World Building

Are you a bit stuck writing that world of yours? Even with the website I gave before, you still have a bit of trouble with the world building. Well, since you dropped by here are a couple videos that helped me get a better grasp on the world I created for my book.Don't forget though that this is your work, so don't treat all advice as if it's set in stone. 1)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQTQSbjecLg&t=210s How to build a fictional world - Kate Messner As I said in my earlier post on  world building websites , this video was a very short one and some people in the comments said it didn't really answer anything about world building. But for me I  had my first eureka moment after watching this video.  I think most of us grew up watching or reading fantasy work, even if it wasn't some of the most  classic and famous works . Despite those works of fiction and the games we play giving us an  idea the whole concept of world building might still fly ...
